What is riichi mahjong, anyway?
It's a game of luck and strategy!
Mahjong is a 4-player, tile based game from 18th century China, where players draw and discard tiles to build specific hands, aiming to complete a winning shape before their opponents. Riichi mahjong (or Japanese Mahjong) is a variant that adds upon the original in unique ways. While it shares roots with other forms of mahjong played around the world, riichi is known for its strict ruleset, competitive structure, and emphasis on strategic decision-making rather than memorization alone.
It's unique and challenging!
A defining feature of riichi mahjong is the “riichi” declaration, which a player can make when they are one tile away from winning. Declaring riichi locks the player’s hand but adds tension and higher potential rewards, turning the game into a battle of nerve, deduction, and timing. Special scoring elements like bonus tiles (dora), risk-reward choices, and defensive play create dramatic swings and keep every round engaging, even for players who are not close to winning.
It's a growing community!
From Japan to the heart of Texas, riichi mahjong has a growing international community, supported by online platforms, tournaments, anime and video game appearances, and of course, awesome clubs like LSR. Its blend of luck, skill, and psychology makes it a life-long hobby for those willing to learn. Whether played casually with friends or competitively, riichi mahjong delivers a unique experience that rewards both careful planning and bold moves. Will you be the next to get a yakuman?
